What is Travel Technology Essentials?
The travel industry is complex, and the technologies that makes it work can seem overwhelming. Travel Technology Essentials is an online course that will give you a good understanding of the technologies that drive the travel industry - this is essential knowledge for any travel manager or anyone who wants to set up their own agency!
This course gives you a practical guide to the technologies that power the modern business of travel. The course is designed for people who are not experts at technology but would like to understand what it's all about..
What the course covers
Topics range from the Internet to the Web and Web 2.0; to business grade telephony and Voice over IP (VoIP); to travel-specific technology frameworks used for distribution, aggregation, and sales. The course also covers the technologies used for logistics, operations, marketing, revenue accounting, and more... painting a holistic "big picture" view of the global travel technology landscape.
As you you complete the course, you will learn about all of the tools needed to manage a complete travel e-commerce website, apractical case studies of setting up travel offices and call centers. You will learn about traditional GDS-based travel distribution frameworks, emerging competitors like Global New Entrants (GNEs), and newer travel technology models including Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs).
The course is broken down into 6 main units, as follows:
- Unit 1: Introduction to the course and telecom and travel technology basics.
- Unit 2: Covers the history and modern state of telephony, computer networks, the Internet, the Web and Web 2.0, and other general technologies that are used to conduct travel-related business.
- Unit 3: Covers the history and modern state of travel sales and distribution frameworks, including GDSs, GNEs, and Internet-based e-commerce.
- Unit 4: Covers all of the other major travel technologies that support things like e-ticketing, data aggregation, revenue accounting, yield management, B2B communications, etc.
- Unit 5: Presents an overall picture of the global technology landscape, followed by case studies of setting up travel offices and call centers throughout the world.
- Unit 6: Talks about the trends that will shape the future of telecom and travel technology, and wraps up the course.

Online Delivery
After your enrolment is processed, a username (your e-mail address) and an allocated student ID will give you access to the course which is delivered entirely online.. It is important to take each quiz as the questions reinforce the learning process and help you to remember the key learning points. You should complete the material within one month for maximum retention but you have access to the material until your hours expire or 3 months after registration at which time your access will expire. You may also purchase additional block hours (for example 5 or 10) if you want to revise the material again in the future. PREREQUISITES
There is no prerequisite knowledge required for this course.
PC and keyboard skills are however, considered necessary for travel industry employment. To improve keyboard skills why not take a Typequick course?
ASSESSMENTS
Progressive online assessment is inbuilt into the programme. There are five quizes and a final exam.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
